Public Sector in India has made substantial contribution for the socio-political transformation and the development of Indian economy since independence. The vast public sector has ensured the formation of a vibrant middle class which in turn produced both skilled workers and professionals. The combination of federalism, democracy and mixed economy has laid the foundation of Industrial growth in India. At present there are 242 Central Public Sector Undertakings in India out of which 214 are in operation. Some of them are in the process of construction and others are in the verge of closure/revival. The GOI has recently brought out a report on the performance of CPSE’S for the year 2007-08, which was placed in both houses of parliament during February 2009. The CPSEs play a very important role in the growth of Indian economy.
